Great Sports Movies-Classics Old & New
Today in class we watched the first thirty minutes of arguably one of the greatest baseball movies of all time -- arguments for Field of Dreams, Bang the Drum Slowly, and Bull Durham can be made. With that said, if you were choosing a movie for us to watch in class, which movie would you choose and why? After looking at the list I've constructed, select a movie of your own (from my list or one off of the list) and then comment below. Name the movie and then explain your choice. This is worth 5 points. We'll vote in class.

Here's a list, in no particular order, of some of the greatest sports films around.
ReplyDeleteSlapshot
Field of Dreams
Bull Durham
Tin Cup
North Dallas Forty
The Great White Hope
Raging Bull
The Hustler
Caddyshack
Hoosiers
The Natural
Jerry Maguire
The Pride of the Yankees
The Babe
Ali
Cinderella Man
Bad News Bears (original)
Any Given Sunday
Rocky
Brian’s Song
When We Were Kings
Breaking Away
Eight Men Out
Vision Quest
Remember the Titans
Major League
The Hurricane
Rocky II
Any Given Sunday gets my vote. I think the movie addresses realistc ideas in sports including ownership, QB controversy, and coaching controversy. Yes, the teams are fake but I love this movie, espically Al Pachinos speech.
ReplyDeleteI also wouldn't mind seeing Hooseirs or any of the Rocky movies (except 5). The newest Rocky is actually pretty decent as well.
(a movie not on the list)
ReplyDelete1. Finding Forrester--This movie is tied for my favorite sports movie of all time (see #4), possibly one of my all-time favorites. This movie would be perfect for our sports lit class because it's about a basketball playing writer. He's sick on the court and his writing is what people don't know about him. It's a great story.
2. Hoosiers--My favorite basketball movie, my second favorite sports movie. It's just an awesome movie with the little guy winning. The craziness of a small school like that being the state championship, especially because there is only one division.
3. Jerry Maguire--I have recently began to love this movie. I like the ups and downs Tom Cruise goes through to make money, while dealing with the arrogant and cocky players, coaches, and front office.
4. Field of Dreams--Tied for my favorite sports movie of all time, possibly my favorite movie of all time. I love it, it's awesome.
Rocky III is an excellent sports movie and gets my vote. Easily the most dramatic and epic movie of the six, and any movie with Mr. T is definitely worth seeing.
ReplyDelete1. Finding Forrester, I agree with Chris, I completely forgot about this movie. It is an often overlooked sports movie. It ties in sports to life and addresses a common sterotype of race problems. Plus, it's unpredictable and doesn't fall into any basic themes. The movie doesn't turn out like you think it will.
ReplyDelete2. Knute Rockne All-American. It's kinda corny but it shows how football evolved and it uses old footage of the game which is interesting to watch. Also, it addresses football before scholarships, which is why schools playing games like michigan playing local ymcas wasn't a big deal because schools didn't recruit they just played with the students that showed up.
My vote goes to Hoosiers, a classic basketball movie that you have to love.
ReplyDeleteAny Given Sunday is my back up and is a great football movie with very realistic views
Caddyshack- its a golf and comedy classic everyone loves caddyshack.
ReplyDeleteTeschner are you seriois, no miracle?! MIRACLE BY FAR! One of the biggest upsets in sports histroy, the movie is amazing.
ReplyDeleteMIRACLE
ReplyDeleteMIRACLE
ReplyDeleteI was just offering up a short list of some movies I either own or have enjoyed. Miracle is a great movie because of the real-life events more so than the quality of the movie. The movie is very good, but only great because of what it depicts. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteAny Given Sunday - an awesome football movie
ReplyDeleteRocky 1-4 - the first four are the greatest of the series any one of them will be great to watch
No happy gilmore?
No varsity blues or invincible either?
Those are some great sports movies too.

ReplyDeleteI agree with ethan that miracle is a great movie but also Glory Road is a good basketball movie.
ReplyDeleteHere is the link for other racing movies

This same web site has other sports movies

Is still think we should expend our minds in the racing world.
I think we need to expend our minds in the racing world. We always talk about Baseball and Football and any other comon sports. At least can we watch a racing movie.
ReplyDelete"The Dale Earnhardt Story"
Taking a glimpse into the story behind the legend. Showing his genuine affection for the sport of racing, the movie reminds fans Dale Earnhardt the racing isn't all about the championship. It is also about the family
"Speed Racer"
For those that has not seen the new "Speed Racer". This movie show the effect of what money would do to a sport. For Speed, he proves that money has nothing to do with it and show what the love for a sport would do.
Caddyshack!!
I'm with Ethan on the Miracle one...but if not that, then Field of Dreams is one of my favorite movies, although I already watched that in your expo comp class last semester. Oh yeah, and Friday Night Lights is also one of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteI agree with ethan. I think the movie Miracle is a great suggestion. The movie is all about the sport and not money from what i remember. I think its a great movie.
ReplyDeleteremember the titans- great movie, denzel washington was great, and it shows how football can help people overcome extraordinary ciricumstances, like the extreme racism at the time, and how sports can bring people together.
ReplyDeletefinding forrester- i agree with chris and ben, that movie is amazing. and chris is right in saying it fits our class with the literature and sports.
caddyshack- its so damn funny, i would not be against this one
yea so Miracle wins no big
ReplyDeleteMy vote goes to caddyshack. Its a classic film that anyone can enjoy. It might not be the best sports movie but it is great.
ReplyDeleteRemenber the titans is a sick movie. You can never realy get tired of it no matter how many times you see it. Great football movie but also has a lot of life lesson and stuff like that.
ReplyDeleteMiracle seems like a good movie. I havent seen it and have wanted to for a while so it'll be cool to watch in class
i think Remeber the Titans would be a good one. I think the last time i watched it was like 2 years ago.
ReplyDeleteWe should totally watch Gridiron gang or The longest Yard
ReplyDeleteI think I'm gunna have to agree with Joe C, O, and Shuya... Remember the Titans is a great movie. Other ones that I agree with are Finding Forrester, Caddyshack, and Happy Gilmore. I can't agree with Miracle only because i have not seen it. Another movie tht gets my vote is Coach Carter. It's also a great movie.
ReplyDeleteNot many people have seen Finding Forrester, While most of us have seen all the other good sports movies. Gridiron Gang is a good story but a horribly written and acted movie
ReplyDeleteI still vote for something racing!
ReplyDeletegridiron is more ghetto/hardship based than sports.
ReplyDeleteRacing!
ReplyDeleteso i really thought this posted last night so sorry for the lateness but the three that i think our best with what we've been talking about are
ReplyDeletehoosiers- great storyline with a small town team and its connection that is built through sports
field of dreams- great generational depiction of baseball
remember the titans- great representation of how sports helps to overcame barriers in society
in addition i love vainisis post of jerry maguire because it really shows the modern world of sports and the balance of caring about the players vs. the money
Any Given Sunday is a great football movie. That is where my vote goes...
ReplyDeleteI think enough people voted for Any Given Sunday for it to have been on the ballot
