Feb. 2nd Comments

Great job today with discussion. The fire drill was quite annoying, but you did a good job nevertheless. As for tomorrow, I won't be in class so you'll have a sub. You've got some reading to do in class, as well as a bit of summarizing from the articles you were given on Friday. We'll see you tomorrow!

HERE'S A QUICK QUESTION FOR YOU:

Does Michael Phelps, as an Olympic athlete, have more of a responsibility to be a role model than Tom Brady, Alex Rodriguez, Tiger Woods, etc.?

  1. No, he does not. I think people have the right to be outraged, but I am suprised about the overall reaction to this. This past summer, Phelps is the only thing you heard about. Everyone was obsessed with him. Now after one mistake, those feelings have turned. Does anyone know how many athletes smoke marjuana? Of course that doesn't justify it, but even last nights super bowl MVP Santonio Holmes has been involved in the act of smoking and selling marajuana. Hopefully, for Phelps sake, time will heal this because he is a great athlete and even if he likes to take an occasional hit from a bong that doesn't take away from his eight gold medals and incredible swimming ability.

  2. Most people don't remember that Phelps got a DUI a few months after the 2004 Athens Olympics. He said he learned from his mistake, but here is he messing up again. I think that he has just as much of a responsibility as a role model as other athletes. A lot of kids look up to him and it's unfortunate that they'll probably hear about this. I'm thinking most likely he wont get a whole lot of endorsements after the incident and people will probably forget about it, and him, until the 2012 Olympics.

  3. He rode his olympic success all the way to the bank, and with this it's probably over. No wonder he was able to eat 10,000 calories a day...

  4. Phelps is supposed to get $100 million from endorsements this year, i doubt he loses all of that.
But, Phelps isn't the same role model that A-Rod, Tiger, and Brady are because he isn't in the limelight as much as they are. Tom Brady walks around New York in a Yankees hat and you would have thought he shot Kevin Youkillis. Those guys are constantly being watched, therefore they're bigger role models. Plus, they play much more popular sports, which are constantly on TV. Their on and off the court antics are monitored much more.

  5. I hope people realize that Micheal Phelps really isn't a good role model. He got a DUI when he was 19 and now we know he does drugs. Tom Brady, A Rod and Tiger all have a clean record so they are good role models. People finally are going to realize that he is not the great person everyone makes him out to be. Besides he won't be talked about until the next olympics.

  7. tiger, a rod, and brady are bigger role models because, as chris said, they are always in the limelight, always being watched, always performing. phelps comes around once every 4 years, and after the next olympics, he will probably be done, granted, his accomplishments at the olympics this year provided a very strong feeling of pride and dominance for some americans, which is great, but his name wont be coming up again for a while, unless he does something stupid again. and kent, stop generalizing an entire group of people.

  8. I personally don't really care much for Phelps but I do think he should be more careful. I don't care if he wants to do crack or anything else, but he should think about how the public views him. He should take more responsibilities for his actions and apologize to everyone that idolized him.
