they had it for last year too, the 10 minute thing was for last year as well. I've had a year to adjust, works alright. Kind of liked having the first three rounds on the first day before, round three is still a crucial one and feels so disconnected on the second day now.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be interesting to have the first round on Thursday night because I think more people would watch for that one night. However, consequently, I think less people would watch the second and third rounds which would be on Friday night.
ReplyDeleteIt has to be on a saturday because you need that amount of time. People that are going to watch the draft are going to watch it. NBA draft is on a wednesday and there ratings are lower i believe. Anyways, its a draft, not a game, there ratings for it are not the main objective at all. The massive televising of it has only been going on for a little while and it is only as a result of some people's massive obsessions. The only objective the draft has is to select players. Having it on a saturday allows for the best way of doing it.
ReplyDeleteHaving it on a Saturday is the best way and TV ratings aren't the main objective. But I think the NFL and ESPN do care about ratings enough that they would make this switch if they felt it would increase ratings.
ReplyDeletebut it wouldnt tho, btw NFL network broadcasts the draft also so there not going to do anything to specifically better ESPN with this. But really the thing that is the most important at the end of the day is what most benefits the team's drafting on draft day. Those are the ones that would have to approve of a switch at that wouldnt happen. There would be nothing worse than for the NFL to switch something to get TV ratings and then a team not get the player that would bolster their franchise.
ReplyDeleteidk how a team wouldn't get a player because of a switch in the TV schedule. I see what you're getting at and I sort of agree but the NFL draft is becoming such a big event on TV that I don't see any conceivable reason why they wouldn't make this switch. I'm not saying that they should but I'm not doubting that they will.
ReplyDeletehmm a switch to a five minute clock not hurting anything? stuff like that is bound to happen and the saturday allows them to have more of their staff in the warroom, rather than if their making picks at midnight for guys there paying a guaranteed 10 million. saturdays where it has to stay
ReplyDelete5 minutes is definitly enough time. In the first round all the teams have a general idea of who their going to pick and in the war rooms they are observing other teams picks from the start of the draft and reviewing scenarios. For example, Seattle knew this year that if Aaron Curry were available he would be there guy. If the chiefs had taken him over Tyson Jackson, the Seahawks would consider Sanchez, Jackson,a trade or possibly even Crabtree (outside shot). Each team has a few players on their board and by the time their 5 minutes start they wll have a good understanding of where they should go.
