A blog for the FHS Advanced Topics in Literature: Sports class. This blog is an open, moderated, opportunity for students of the class to share their feelings on modern topics in sports literature and beyond.
I believe baseball is the most unrelenting of sports because the history of baseball is all about stats and curses. The Sox Buckner, the Cubs Bartmen, the mistakes in the history of baseball are always remembered. I believe this is so because baseball has the most knowledgable and loyal fans. To an aging athlete sports provide a release from everyday life. A nice get away and a flash from the past of their childhood.
ReplyDeleteI feel that wrestling is the most unrelenting of sports because I think it's the hardest sport to let go. As bad as it sounds even people that leave the sport when found it an altercation, turn to some sort of wrestling in a fight. The base of wrestling fans is small but strong and doesn't fade in and out as much as other sports. Sports provide a sense of reflection for what an aging athlete use to be and serve as a way for them to remember their past.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to agree with Chris on this one. The one sport I believe you can truly leave a lasting legacy is in baseball. The timelessness of the game transcends generations and the special moments are never forgotten. For an older athlete, it gives them a chance to connect with the youth of the sport and pass on their skills to a younger generation.
ReplyDeleteI think football is the most unrelenting sport because of its competitiveness and it is more demanding of the athletes body than other sports. I also think it is the most lasting in ones life because anyone who has played football will testify that they have had a lot of unforgettable memories on and off their field with their teammates. Thats why most retired pros either become coaches, analysts etc. They do not want to let go of the game they love

ReplyDeleteI think that football and soccer be soccer are the most unrelenting sports out there. The amount of stress put on ones leg are extreme in soccer, which makes it near impossible for old people to play pro for a long time. And in football tackles wear down on the players' body. I think the most lasting sport would be swimming because you don't need to put as much stress on your bones and muscles as physical contact sports do. Also, you can swim just for the fun or exercise. Sports can be some peoples' lives, and they can make people friends and for them to remember how they used to play ball when they were young.
ReplyDeleteI think that all types of auto racing, not only NASCAR, is unrelenting. It take so much to be able to drive a race car. There is much practice that need tp be taken, nkowlegde of how a race car feel when different thing are done to it, even the steps to be a professional race car driver is hard. YOu have to one get to know the many race terms and many parts of the car, be able to atain sponcorship to pay for the racing equipment, you also have to prove your self to a team so you can get help with money and most importantly you have to be able to last hours in these machines. you have to have the stenghth and endurance to race. A football, baseball, or even a soccor player can just jump into a race car they are made for that one sport and not a multipe of them
ReplyDeleteI agree with Perna that wrestling is the most unrelenting of sports because the amount of stress you have to put on your body in different situations, not to mention the damage your body takes from cutting weight, that may not apply to all who try to cut weight but it does to most. It is the hardest to let go because once you step away, you have the urge to get back on the mat, that is why many wrestlers go into coaching or even MMA because wrestling is a huge component in MMA and it is a strong background to have. Like what Oladapo said, in his comment "They do not want to let go of the game they love"
ReplyDeleteAs I read all these, everybody picked their own sport ha. The answer is simple, it's all sports. You can leave a legacy in any game, it's the person not the sport. In any sport, when someone retires, they want to comeback and get emotional when they say goodbye.
ReplyDeleteI agree with ethan. All the sports mentioned have their own uniqueness and individual qualities that make them appealing. Whatever sport you love or played, thats the one you will remember and cherish and miss. With every sport comes its own memories.
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with O. With the level of competition being so high, football causes athletes to exert more energy and have a longer lasting effect on the athletes body. I read an article about a study that was done and it said for every hit someone takes in the nfl it knocks of X amount of minutes from their life. A random fact, but it is relevant to the aging of an athlete.
ReplyDeleteI'm agreeing with Ethan and Joe. If you grew up with a sport, of course its going to stay with you, just like any other part of your childhood. That's why everyone has chosen their favorite sport. There's an argument for every sport out there as to why it's the most relentless. For me, it's baseball because it brings generations together: America's favorite pasttime.
ReplyDeleteI think i might have to say hockey with this one. There are so many guys that play and play into their mid 40's its crazy, just so hard to put down. In addition, from what I have seen the hockey culture, particuraly in canada, seems to be engrained in kids exclusively more than some other sports. A lot of the best football basketball and baseblall players may play other sports but it really seems like the elite hockey players, that's all they do and there's something about that rink culture that seems to get people not being able let go.
ReplyDeleteIt's baseball because so many people played in when they were kids. Weather they were good or not they still rember playing in their youth. It also has alot to do with the tradition: the hot dogs, peanuts, organ music, catching foul balls etc. So many memories are made from baseball.
ReplyDeleteI think baseball is because it has so much history and symbolizes so much. It's a very social sport to watch because you can still be into the game, but having a conversation or doing something else. Many people can enjoy it even if they don't fully understand what's going on with it.
ReplyDeleteI think football is the best sport. Ive always loved football and no that i always will love Football. Even though i now love hockey i will always love football more
ReplyDeletei Believe football is the best sport and have always thought this. I as well think hockey is another great sport
ReplyDeletei think hockey or football would have to be the most unrelenting sports because of the amount of stess that is consistly put on the body. play pro for 10 to 15 years in either of those sports complitly comprimises your body
ReplyDeletei think the most unrelenting sport has to be football. Getting rocked a few times in a game every game for several years can have its toll on your body. Not to mention the players that do hit you are trained to hit you as hard as they can which makes the hit that much more devestating and relenting on your body
